Very cute (thanksgiving) book! Teaches kids to be thankful for everyday things. Very short book but it's perfect for a beginning reader. My kids love it!
Sweet book. Some examples of things to be thankful for. My hesitancies are the same as others have mentioned. I'm a little touchy about the "they love you when you're good... or even if you break a vase" (I've paraphrased here).I don't really read that as unconditional love. It definitely could be challenged. But, my grandchildren (3yr and 5yr), were not concerned about that. They blew right past it in the "bigger picture" of giving thanks. The other thing that bothers me though is that even though there is a bit of diversity in the features of the kids, this is still a very traditional portrait of a Thanksgiving: two parents, two kids, happy prosperous grandparents, turkey for thanksgiving, leaves falling from the trees. If your family doesn't look like this, it may seem a bit foreign or even patronizing. I don't want to go overboard here since it's a simple little book, but just sayin'.... (FYI - I have a WASP background and am part of this traditional scene, so perhaps I am too sensitive?)
We have owned this great little book for about four years now, and both of my kids have enjoyed it thoroughly. It has a great message about being thankful for everyday things in our lives (family, pets, even hot chocolate on a cold day), and the illustrations are warm and inviting. It's a great length for a toddler to sit through, and the pictures offer plenty of details to discuss (i.e. "How many cats are in the window?" "Can you find a red lollipop?"). We first purchased it when my now-six year old was two; now that she's in first grade, the language is simple enough that she can (very proudly) read it to her younger brother, so it's also a good choice for early independent reading. (The illustrations also feature a lot of good clues for beginning readers who are taught to use pictures to help them figure out unfamiliar words.)The only negative comment I have--and this is a matter of preference/philosophy--is a page where one of the characters says that his parents love him when he's "good, and even when I'm not so good." If you focus on behavior as good/bad rather than the child, you'll need to do a quick edit, but it's one isolated instance in an otherwise excellent book.
I'm not a fan of this book. It just gives totally random things this kid is thankful for, doesn't really help explain what being thankful means it how it relates to thanksgiving.
Very sweet, not too wordy. The book has a great message of being thankful for "the things that make me happy" (mom and dad, extended family-grandma specifically is named, my bedroom, hot chocolate, books, lollipops, sunshine, friends, cats/dogs, teacher, and being with family on thanksgiving). Just what we wanted for our 3 year old, and you can't beat the price.
This book was great to read to my students who have significant disabilities. It was short and sweet but also very informative for them. It explained what we do at Thanksgiving and kept their interest.
I bought this for my 3 year old son to help him understand what Thanksgiving is all about. He has already been saying thank you when receiving things since he was about 2 but I think this helps with understanding that you can be thankful for everyday things in your life like family and pets. It's not one of his favorites for us to read, but a good one to read for the holiday.
a nice book without all the pilgrim/indians stuff that usually comes along with thanksgiving books.... this book focuses on thanksgiving bringing people together and food. perfect. thank you.
