I find this “book†to be extremely difficult to recommend to anyone. Part 1 is really the only complete part of the three parts. Parts 2 & 3 are really an outline of what Sade was going to complete. In all, it becomes rather tedious. Yes, I get that eating feces was some fascination to these people and must have been one of Sade’s most desired besides torture and murder, but give me a break!! The use of feces was over the top and quite disgusting. As for the many scenes portrayed in Part 1, some (few) were enticing while most were just weirdly disgusting. Moving along to Part 2 (just an outline), things get more tortuous in the telling of the scenes. Although brief in detail, the idea of each scene is clearly conveyed and typical BDSM activities are illustrated rather well. But, again with the consumption of feces! Part 3, like Part 2, is again more of an outline. This is where the his namesake becomes clear. The sadistic and tortuous scenes conveyed in this part are, in my opinion, way too far for my tastes, but I hardly look at Sade as anything other than a murderous, evil, deplorable villain. These scenes are difficult to fathom and you wish upon all hopes there might be a fair ending for the tortured subjects. You, however, know by the the time you reach Part 3 that hope is n vain.Read this if you have a strong nature. It will occasionally make you laugh (very occasionally), but most, I believe, will feel more disgust and utter shock at what the mind of the Marquis de Sade could dream up. You have been warned.
Most assuredly not for the easily offended. But chock full of the darkness in human nature.
I love the obscure and obscene but even I can't read more than a few pages at a time before I need to give my conscience and soul a break. Not for the faint.
wouldn't be too bad if they could get past all the poop eating. Towards the end, I thought it was just way too off the hook to the point of ridiculousness. Honestly, I found the book somewhat disturbing
I have a hard time explaining why I absolutely adore Sade, and an even harder time explaining why I love this book.It's the sickest, most twisted piece of literature I've ever read. It was supposed to be written in four parts, but only one part was finished completely by Sade. The other three parts are written in abbreviated form, but this somehow doesn't make it any less disturbing.The plot of the book involves four libertines who have taken refuge in a castle with a number of people who they've collected for the sole purpose of having weird, depraved sex. Four prostitutes narrate their own life experiences, and the libertines design sex acts based on their stories. these sex acts are recounted in extreme graphic detail, using language that somehow manages to be elegant.This is a good English translation and, if you can manage to trudge through the farts, murder, and copious amounts of anal rape, you'll find yourself better for it at the end. If you're looking for a tamer version of Sade, try "The Crimes of Love." "120 Days of Sodom" is not erotica the way we know it today. It's more of an appeal to the sexual senses, even the senses that only exist to tell us what's rotten.
Arrived on time, and in excellent condition.. I have heard stories about this book, but I wanted to see for myself.. they weren't lying, this book is very dark, and very sexual.. caution to the weak will..
hard to read
I own all of his works and probably read almost everything de Sade related. I find his work honest and hilarious if only more than a little dark but perfect nonetheless. I like the way his name is something you hear in the back of bookstores whispered about ....only makes the mystery surrounding his works better.
