Containing stories from National Review's private collection of St. Nicholas Magazine volumes (spanning the period from 1874 through the 1930s), this beautifully crafted and lavishly illustrated book includes some of the most entertaining, touching, and wholesome children's stories that have ever graced paper. The National Review Treasury of Classic Children's Literature brings back over forty literary gems--many long forgotten. Now, in the light of a new generation, they are as radiant, if not more radiant, than they were when first published. It will take the family who owns it on an exciting voyage, back to the Golden Era of children's literature--a more innocent time when the famous St. Nicholas Magazine offered the youth of America a monthly cornucopia of wonderful stories, tales, fables, and adventures, written by the literary giants of the time. An unsurpassed compilation of wonderful children's stories by great writers--or in the opinion of many, the greatest writers--this is a volume that can be counted on to provide youngsters and teens with superlative prose and poetry that entertain and, more importantly, promote and instill those values and lessons increasingly needed in our current culture.

Searching for a read-aloud book that you might share with your children, you would score a consensus winner with this compendium of rich, highly captivating tales. The two selections from Jack London, "In Yeddo Bay" and "To Repel Boarders" were springboards for our youngsters beyond this book and on to "The Call of The Wild" and "White Fang." Similarly, short fables from Louisa May Alcott and Lewis Carroll opened our ears to continue with more famous, longer works by those authors. Rudyard Kipling's "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi" and Mowgli's Brothers", "Tommy and the Meadowmice" by Thornton W. Burgess, "Juggerjook" by L. Frank Baum, creater of Oz, and "The Voyage of the Northern Light" by John Townsend Trowbridge each held my kids' attention as we read them aloud at dinner or at bedtime. The inestimable Mark Twain weighs in with a novella "Tom Sawyer Abroad" that is a perfect followup to a summertime reading of "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn." There is plenty of selection here for everyone to be happy. Give your kids the gift of colorful, imaginative literature...then read it aloud with them.If Mr. Buckley's politics or his pomposity is a bother, worry not about it here...he pens a pithy pre-amble, and among the classics also includes a modern-day computer adventure entitled "The Temptation of Wilfred Malachey." Just plain fun!
This collection of 38 stories selected and compiled by Bill Buckley is drawn mostly from the old St. Nicholas Magazine for children. The stories are of varied length (less than 10 pp. to more than 50). Although the authors and stories are of excellent quality (Kipling, Baum, Twain, Burgess, London, etc.), I would have liked some more variety.
2 books - vol 1 and 2 are both great!
Truly a Treasure! Every child should have this book.
