In only 150 pages, the authors manage to provide a complete portrait of a country and its peoples. The multitude of topics is amazing: history, culture, religion, government, family, relationships, day-to-day living, reading between the lines, formal and informal social interactions, how space is organized, and what visitors can expect to see. It also provides a brief survey of famous contributors in the arts and humanities. The book takes an apparently casual approach, arranged to be easy on the eyes, but it does cover several serious issues. As the authors point out, the book provides an anthropological analysis of Colombia and Colombians, but that doesn’t prevent the text from being a delight to read, with upbeat, creative illustrations placed next to the appropriate text. The text font in size, type, and layout, is reader-friendly. The binding is strong, whether for a library or for those bringing the book along on a visit. I wish that all brief, country surveys were written in this way. In all, it’s a worthy purchase!
A clever, lighthearted but serious book that asserts that the best way to "love" a culture is to openly accept as much as you can about it and then criticize it a bit.With a very "British" sense of understated humor, Kellaway is able to frame any experience of the Colombian people as something beyond good and bad. For every positive that is written, there is sure to be a negative that encourages the reader to think more about what they experience (especially if they are in Colombia experiencing it). This makes this book more valuable than any romantic tourist spectacle you could spend a few thousand pesos on.The humor of Kellaway's writing is greatly supplemented by the illustrations of Lievano. This is especially apparent in his drawing of a Colombian mother larger than the Earth itself, nose in the air, finger in declaration, but with her hand over the head of a smaller, tired maid (domestic worker) and obscuring an even smaller man or father.The book seems to be written for foreigners most likely of European or United States origin. The book makes many references to Euro-centric culture, usually at the beginning of chapters and sections, with references to Oscar Wilde, the Scorpion and the Frog, and Schopenhauer, for example. But this makes it easier for foreigners to empathize and understand the experience of Colombia.Through this, one realizes that Colombia is not so different from other countries even though it exhibits undeniable charming uniqueness. For the foreigner looking in from the outside, it also challenges them to look critically at the absurdities and eccentricities of their own culture, which enables greater dialogues and conversations between different peoples and furthers one's understanding of oneself as well as the other.There is probably no better English introduction to the history and culture of Colombia right now. While researching Colombia, I was incredibly excited to find this book and quickly ordered it. I was not disappointed. Victoria Kellaway and Sergio Lievano give an essential and light hearted primer to the people and land of this charmingly quirky country. It also does a good job of giving a person a sense of the breadth of this country: Colombia has everything from Caribbean beaches, snowy mountains and Amazonian rainforest, not to mention the Athens of South America- Bogotá. And lest we forget the real jewel of the country, los Colombianos. Do yourself a favor and get a copy of this book.
I bought this book as I was looking for information on Colombia, which I knew virtually nothing about, and we had scheduled a trip to Cartagena with our two adult daughters during Thanksgiving week. It is written in a very amusing and informative way. I took it with us, and both daughters read parts of it while there. It's the type of book that you can read out of sequence if you want to explore a specific topic.
I was living in Colombia when this book came out and blasted through it because of the fact that it was spot on with my experience. Sometimes my jaw dropped as I read things that had I had always through but wouldn't dare actually talk about with Colombians... and therefore they wouldn't necessarily talk about with me. Although that might make it sound quite controversial (if teasingly vague?) I know for a fact that the book was written from a place of love for the country and its people and a genuine desire to take on board what Colombia has to offer us as well as see the country and its people prosper.
Funny and greatly illustrated, this little book is an essential read for lovers of Colombia!It has been a pure joy to read the authors’ serious “take†on all the little crazy traits of Colombian society that I used to boil over futilely. Now I know I wasn't being too sensitive - someone even wrote a book about it! I worked in Colombia for a few years and the place drove me crazy. It drove me crazy yet I fell in love with the place. This book – through a fine sense of humor and great illustrations - provides serious answers enabling the reader to end any emotional contortions and embrace Colombia for all the good and the bad.
