Great book. Though each step mentions the tool used, one minor thing that would have been useful is an index of all the tools used throughout the book. In case anyone else finds that useful, here's the list I compiled of tools used:- Carving knife- Detail knife- 1/8" (3mm) V gouge- 1/4" (7mm) #3 sweep gouge- 3/8" (10mm) #3 sweep gouge- 1/8" (3mm) #5 sweep gouge- 1/8" (3mm) #6 sweep gouge- 3/8" (10mm) #9 sweep gouge- 1/16" (2mm) #11 sweep veiner- 1/8" (3mm) #11 sweep veiner- 1/4" (7mm) #11 sweep veiner- 3/16" (5mm) skew chisel- a few unspecified micro gouges
For any who find this book looking for some good carving guides, this one is great. Multiple examples taking you not only through each aspect of the face (ears, eyes, nose, lips, hair), but also multiple examples of different types of faces (woman, cowboy, witch, grumpy old man, santa, indian, etc).One important side note, if you look up Harold Enlow's other books, you may see a bunch of listings for "How to carve" workbooks. Those are all mini-booklets. This book is a compilation of all of those mini-booklets, so you're better off just buying this one.
Great book!
The photographs in this book are small and taken with too wide an angle lens, making the details hard to see. The text for the first example, carving an eye, say eyes are basically carved with 4 v-tool cuts. Well it took 13 photo step many of which were poorly described. The only reason I am keeping the book, is because it was inexpensive and I can donate it to the local library.
If you have a hobby and purchase a book or CD and can learn something from it, then I say it was worth the purchase whether you loved it or not. In this case, I learned some things from the book, but was disappointed that there wasn't more detail provided as the author went from one step to another. I consider myself an early intermediate carver, but I have little experience with faces. I needed a little more detail to help me along in some areas. However, I do realize that one has to practice carving features before expecting to have a great looking complete carving of a face. The book along with other sources and some trial and error are getting me to where I want to be. The book does show how to carve 7 different faces along with how to carve individual parts of the face. It makes for a nice reference book.
This is an excellent book for those interested in carving both as a beginner or to up your talent. The illustrations are detailed and easy to follow. Step by step instructions are included. Better than the others in the same category!
I'm a real noob at carving. Before reading the book I didn't know the difference between a wood chip and a cow chip. The step by step photos have helped a great deal.The important thing I think is that I can see real progress. Not museum quality of course, but with practice it does get better, and I've found that to be kind of inspirational. I've had several false starts in this hobby that ended with frustration. Things are looking brighter this time.
Has provided much needed information for son who is a beginning wood carver. Incredibly easy to follow instructions. My son doesn't like to read much but couldn't get him to put this book down till he read it three times!
