The concluding chapter of this book defined and explained much of what needed to be addressed in the beginning of the book. I would have liked to have more detail about the Baroque sensibilities as they influenced the architecture of church façades like the cathedral in Zacacatecas and the estipite columns like the open-weave of those in Huayapam, Oaxaca. The author bases some of his theories of comparison between the Baroque and Bourbon reform era on very limited numbers of comparison which even he admits may not be statistically significant.
I really enjoyed this analysis of the Baroque episteme-- the theology, mentality, behind such richly corporeal devotional practices. The shift to Enlightenment conceptions of an immaterial divinity made much more sense of the less material nature of Enlightened Catholic worship. Great intellectual/cultural/religious history, with some real gems of examples.
