I was sad to see this wonderful book was out of print while browsing amazon, but fortunately I was lucky enough to find a cheap copy at a used bookstore not too long ago. It has since become a favorite of mine, a thoroughly entertaining, insightful, and expertly organized review of drug culture, not only of the recent one which has been the subject of an onslaught by the American government, but throughout history as well. Wildest Dreams is a collection of works of literature which date as far back as the 18th century which focus on drug use, proving that drugs are not a recent development and have been the subject of experimentation as well as criticism for many great minds throughout history. While one may think that such a collection is nothing more than an acid-washed, cocaine-fueled exercise in recalling maniacal behavior by senseless addicts, the book chronicles stories, opinions, lectures, and recollections of drug experiences by authors such as Edgar Allen Poe, Aldous Huxley, and even King James I, who offers one of the earliest anti-smoking speeches ever delivered. Those worried about an anti-drug lecture will rejoice to find that not only are two excerpts of Hunter S. Thompson works present, but also that many of the drug experiences and trips catalogued here are quite joyful, mind-bending experiences which prove drugs have their good side as well as their bad, both of which are laid out in plain view for the readers own interpretation. Anyone who has ever strayed into substance use/abuse or addiction can testify to both the ups and downs of the rollercoaster which drugs can take the mind on, and Wildest Dreams is partial to neither, in my opinion the books greatest quality. The reader can take whatever they want from the read and decide whether to accept drugs or not, although those with an open mind will probably get the point that being too partial to any one side of the debate rules out several important points being missed in the other. The book never lacks interest or entertainment value, but chapters which stood out to me are the bone chilling Edgar Allen Poe opium-induced nightmare of Ligeia, the story of the Satanic Witch who uses toxic lotions and other poisons to infect a monastary with evil from the inside, the story by the author's name which I can't remember who recalls a Tibetan sex and hashish driven acid trip, and most interesting and original of all, the New York resident who tries an unheard of high: shooting up the blood of a schizophrenic to duplicate the effects of insanity. Another authors journey through the streets of London after eating a block of hashish, which is both a beautiful and horrifying experience, as well as the study of an Indian tribe during their peyote dance and ritual are also utterly fascinating, as is William S. Burroughs excerpt from Naked Lunch, who may have created the writing style of the manic and insane. I could go on for hours and pages about how great all the other stories are, but like the book, everyone will take something different home from it in their opinion, and everyone who has ever been interested in drug use, whether by the physical, philosophical, or psychological standpoint, will find something to support their opinion, alter it, or completely flip it on its head. That is the most beautiful thing about not only Wildest Dreams, but about consciousness expansion through drugs as a whole: it covers the wide range of emotions and experiences which complete the horrible and awe-inspiring experience that is a good drug-induced mind plumbing. It is really a tragedy that this book has gone out of print, especially with the number of drug users, alcoholics, and scholars who study all aspects of drug use, in the world. Not only is insight given into worlds which many may be too afraid to cross into, such as mushrooms, LSD, DMT, peyote, opium, and hashish, but new drugs which many have never had the courage or the will to try, such as the injecting of schizophrenic blood into one's own bloodstream, the poisonous seeds of the black henbane, or the many toxic powders which can induce death-like trances or orgasmic experiences, depending on the substance. Such a wide range of substances and experiences are covered here that it is pointless to even try and cover them all in a single internet review. Anyone even remotely interested in expanding their consciousness or in any aspect of the drug world would do well to track this book down, despite how difficult that may be now. It will soon become a lost gem in the realm of literature, and a cohesive collection of so many widely differential and fascinating works is a rarity in the English language or anywhere else. Keep it up Richard Rudgley, I'll be waiting for your next book.
