Like most Americans--and indeed most Westerners, I believe it's safe to say--my knowledge of African history is quite poor. And is always the case when one has a paucity of historical knowledge, one looks at a region's current socioeconomic conditions and just assumes those conditions arose organically, have always prevailed, and most insidiously, can't be changed by any efforts we might make in the present. This is, of course, dangerously false but it's also a natural thought process. This political circular by Doyle, while addressed to an audience of a century ago, provides background as to how an large portion of Central Africa came to find itself in appalling conditions, and unsurprisingly, it was a result of very deliberate, utterly inhumane policies of Belgium, aided and abetted by the rest of the world's apathy. Unfortunately, those conditions only worsened in the decades after Doyle wrote this, and other parts of Africa suffered as bad or worse conditions. The first step to affecting lasting change in those regions that have suffered so much poverty and violence is to understand how the problems came to be in the first place, and in that vein, this piece is fascinating and important. I consider myself a decent amateur historian and yet I had no idea about the terrible history of the Congo, nor the European role in it. This work should be read in every high school in the U.S. and Europe (especially Belgium).
This book is an eye opener of what a man can let happen out of greed. I'd never heard of King Leopold. I've never heard of what he did to the Congo area he controlled. He killed 10 million and is never talked about!! How is that possible? This book is not a fun read. It's brutal! But if we don't learn from history we are destined to repeat it.
This is a highly readable essay about the Congo and the crimes its people suffered at the hands of its colonial "masters." But be warned that it does not read like a book, but as an essay. It is light on exact descriptions of the horrors. It is an interesting read because it was written when the world was finally paying attention to what had been going on under Leopold's rule and thereafter, and Doyle implicates the world's powerful countries in the destruction of the Congo's people, which I hadn't read before.Definitely worth a read, but don't be expecting a "regular" book, instead it is an impassioned essay/plea.
Arthur Co.nail Doyle was a physician and was journalists as well was s a n author. In this treatises his intention was to enlighten the reader understanding of the situation in the Belgium Congo under King Leopold and the push for rubber.
A book that helps explain MANY of the imagined crimes during the so-called "Rape of Belgium" during World War One. History's first industrial genocide, covered up for far too long, covered by one of the great writers of the age. THIS BOOK IS IMPORTANT!
I had no idea that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote non-fiction. This is a blistering expose of Belgium's colonialist practices in the Congo, and helps understand the political and economic backdrop to Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness". You'll never think of the Belgian royals the same way again.
Learning about the Congo for my new job, this is the thrid book I have read. While Heart of Darkness and In the Footsteps of Mr Kurtz allude to colonial abuses of indigenous Congolese, Conan Doyle pulls no punches about the savagery and brutality of a king who acted like a barbarian in his quest for wealth and status. Perhaps the most chilling line in the book is during a Commission of Inquiry into alleged abuses where a young boy is asked how he knows the name of a man killed by colonial powers and answers that the man was his father. Not just murder but the fear and terror instilled by torture and slavery.Conan Doyle uses historical documents and demonstrates the complicity at the highest level of the Belgian administration to the king himself. Chilling reading to get an understanding of how Congo hAS COME TO BE SUCH AN UNSTABLE COUNTRY TODAY.
