About the Author
Ron Field is an internationally acknowledged expert on US military history. Awarded a Fulbright Scholarship in 1982, he taught History at Piedmont High School in California in 1982–83, and was Head of History at the Cotswold School in Bourton-on-the-Water in the UK until his retirement in 2007. In 2005 he was elected a Fellow of the Company of Military Historians, based in Washington, DC, and was awarded its Emerson Writing Award in 2013. In 2015 he became senior editor of Military Images magazine, devoted to the American military image of the nineteenth century. In 2014–2015 he also advised on the Confederate uniforms worn in the Civil War film Free State of Jones. He lives in the UK.

Being a collector of Civil War carte de visite images I was anxious to receive my copy of Silent Witness. It arrived in fine shape and the content is everything and more than one could hope for. The research is impeccable, and the images included are the perfect compliment. What I really enjoyed was the timeline approach taking one from the evolution of that time periods photography, moving from the studio, to the battlefront, the Army camps, the Navy ships, and along the way educating the reader on the photographic artists who were so important in capturing the images from this turbulent time in our nations history.
I am a real fan of Civil War diaries but none have proved quite as interesting as this one. You read this to get an idea of what the war meant to a child caught up in something way over his head. No, I have not finished the book but will shortly because I find it difficult to put down.
It’s an excellent in-depth treatment of an impirtant subject and the reproductions are top-notch.

I received the book in the mail today. The binding is already coming apart. The book looks interesting and I would rate it high other than the binding.
Wow. Someone gave this 3 stars? I would have given it 6. Library book. No purchase. Wonderful book. Many, many Civil War photos. Great prose w them detailing situations and circumstances in which they were taken, too! Info on the photogs. I loved this book. Very well done. Stonewall Jackson photo is amazing. Great photo of Robert E. Lee, not that I am in any way, shape or form a Confederate fan, mind you. Just love the history and the subject matter. If Civil War history is your interest this book is a fit for you. Same if you like the history of photography. Naval photos are grand, too. Loved this one.
Like the book, just wish the book cover wasn't ripped when I got it. Hence, the 4 star review.
