First I'd like to say this is a very detailed and well written book. Dr. Minirth provides clear detailed explanations on Depression, Anger, Anxiety, Worry, Stress and many other feelings that we are all affected by at sometimes in our lives. The problem I had was that , it was so detailed that the religious connections seemed to be afterthoughts. This was way more medical text than inspirational instruction and study. I was actually depressed after I read it and I had to offset that by reading something that would cheer me up.I will say that while I was reading this, my mother was very ill and passed later on, perhaps that impacted my feelings, I don't know. I will say that if I ever have to deal with any of the topics raised by Dr. Minirth, I will definitely read this again.
This is written by a psychiatrist who knows how to explain things in laymen's terms. He has a Christian worldview, but it's not heavy-handed. It isn't necessary to read this all the way through, either. I think it's the kind of thing you keep on hand and then reference chapters on "stress" or "loneliness" etc. when the need arises.
Very real, very true, and proven.God's word clearly includes every aspect of one's being.A MUST READ. You'll be glad you did!
This book contains some very good ideas and information on dealing with depression or anxiety, but it too often read like a psychology textbook. There were even several lists of medications and clinical terms. In addition, it repeated the same information over and over in different chapters. Way too much of this was given in list form, which turned out to be too dry. There were some good parts, however, and I would recommend it for anyone struggling with depression or negative thoughts and those who want to help someone like that, but for others, it would be better to skip this one.
I chose this book because I have and am struggling with depression, a disability and losses. I like his way of writing and his combining physical, mental and spiritual health. I have hope that my life can change.
I found this book very interesting and personally helpful. It is very readable and even enjoyable. I learned things about myself as,well as loved ones. I think I will refer to this book again in the future.
Great reminder that being happy is a choice. Highly recommend this book!
